Alu applications gain recognition

18 April 2005

A wafer-thin wrapper for a delicate chocolate finished with a wild trace of poppy and a barrier foil liner that provides "total climactic protection" for light and temperature-sensitive goods shipped in ISO containers were among the five winners of the European Aluminium Foil Association's 2005 Alufoil Trophies.

Alcan Packaging Singen won recognition for a sophisticated wafer-thin foil coated with a special protective varnish and embossed

with the Chocolate Pavot logo produced for manufacturer Storck's 100th anniversary. The individual candies are wrapped in the foil and red tissue paper and packed in an octagonal collapsible box.

A microwaveable alu ready meal bowl with easy peel closure, produced for six Hot & Cool meals from Germany's Dreistern Konserven, won Impress Group its trophy. With plastic over-closure for use during heating and fork, the bowl is made by Impress in Moelan, France.

Hueck Folien and Cofresco Frischhalteprodukte claim a technical breakthrough for their Quick Alu black alufoil, produced using nanotechnology and developed for faster oven roasting of meat. "Conventional" alufoil reportedly reflects over 90% of oven heat, prolonging roasting. In contrast Quick Alu absorbs and transfers it straight to the food so roasting can be up to 30% faster. The foil was used for Cofresco Frischhalteprodukte's Toppits FixGrill container and Fix-Brat Alu household foil.

Protective Packaging's innovative ProtectAtainer barrier foil ISO container liner allows users to switch from individually packed products to bulk shipping. The aluminium foil laminate provides climactic protection for products susceptible to moisture, oxygen, UV light, temperature extremes and odour transfer.

The fifth winner, Huhtamaki Ronsberg, has developed a stand-up pouch for Unilever Bestfoods' wet sauces in the UK; Knorr Cream Parsley Sauce was launched in the PET/ALU/OPA/PP gravure printed and matt lacquered pouch last year.
