Alcan asks for short-time working measures at French site

19 January 2009

Following a drop in its activity, the management of Alcan Packaging (Rio Tinto) has proposed short-time working measures at its Sélestat site. From the beginning of February 2009, around 70% of the 350 strong workforce, both blue-collar and administrative workers, may have to not come to work on Mondays for a duration nine months. They would be paid 70% of their salary, earning on average EUR 117 (USD 156) less a month. Trade unions are opposed to the plan and have threatened to take action. A works committee is to meet on 19 January 2009.
