UK aerosol filling is holding up well despite the waivering economy suggests the latest data from the British Aerosol Manufacturers’ Association (BAMA).
A small decline (0.6%) is shown proving the resilience of the sector in 2009 despite the recessionary conditions, says the trade body.
The overall situation shows that the UK aerosol sector stood at 1233.2 million units at the close of 2009.
There is continuing strength shown in traditionally strong areas for the UK aerosol sector, notably the personal care category and household aerosols.
Air fresheners have returned to ‘impressive’ growth and UK filling was up 10.8% in 2009, just above waxes and polishes, up by 10.7%. Also faring well were bathroom and kitchen cleaners, up by one third; and other household aerosols, a significant segment of the market at 69.7 million units, were up 27.8%.
BAMA points out that the data refers only to UK aerosol filling capacity and is not a reflection of retail sales. In personal care, while suntan and bronzing showed a marked decline of 45.5% and shaving products were down 16.8%, this reflects the global nature of the aerosol filling sector and not sales.
Other personal care items were up by 6.3 million units giving a 41.4% growth, with deodorants, antiperspirant and body sprays showing growth from 582.4 million to 586.4 million units (up by 0.7%).
In other sectors, paints and lacquers leapt 11.1% compared with 2008. Weaker performers included vet & pet (down by 38.1%); scents & colognes (down by 12.8%); and automotive (down (13.5%),
Cheap own label imports, destocking and down-branding have all had an impact on the overall market.
