Acquisitive APS goes for growth

Northumberland packaging firm APS is targeting a 50% increase in turnover over the next two years after completing a huge fragrance deal with Proctor & Gamble.

The company, Assembly Packaging Services, has also restructured to create two departments, a Commercial Department to incorporate sales and purchasing dealing direct with customers and suppliers, and an Operations Department.

APS was boosted by the contract for three million Christmas gift sets, primarily for UK stores, which typically included three items. APS has handled the contract before, but this year the order was increased by one million sets.

Managing director Chris Pygall says he expects turnover at the contract packer to rise from £10m to £15m by 2009.

The firm employs 300 people at its seasonal peak and has blue chip clients such as Coca-Cola and Body Shop. It has handled P&G work since it was formed 22 years ago.

Pygall joined APS in 2005 after the death of one of the founder partners, since when the former head of Dataform has followed an ambitious growth trail, increasing turnover by more than 17%.
