£1m co-extrusion line on stream in Scunthorpe

British Polythene Industries subsidiary Bpi.films has begun operating a new £1m three-layer co-extrusion machine at its Scunthorpe plant, which produces polythene films for the food and petfood sectors.

The company, which claims to be the UK's only stretchfilm manufacturer with five-layer cast film production technology, says the new line is part of a larger investment programme which has seen it install 10 new co-extrusion lines over the past three years. The equipment's installation required major alterations to the factory to ensure the hi-tech, computerised system could operate to optimum efficiency levels. Bpi.films says the upgrade will benefit both customers and the business via increased throughput and quicker turnaround times.

A three-layer co-extrusion machine works by encasing a tough layer of polythene in between two layers of softer, more flexible outer layers.

“We made sure the machine's installation caused minimum disruption - testing it by running simpler jobs initially to ensure high quality standards before working on customer orders” explains sales manager Julie Enefer. “We have just compiled results from the first batch of products produced and are happy to report we had no returns.”

Bpi.films' products include shrink, produce, bread, lamination and heat lamination, liquid packaging and surface protection films.
