Design industry 'Oscar' awarded to Equator UK recognising outstanding brand and packaging work for Co-op

The team at Equator’s UK studios have been honoured with two coveted accolades for packaging design excellence at The Vertex Awards 2019 International Private Brand Design Competition.

In addition to landing a bronze award for a redesign of Co-op’s Christmas range, the design-to-shelf packaging design and branding agency garnered a special commendation in the form of a Publishers’ Choice Award in recognition of Equator’s design work around Co-op’s limited-edition Halloween range.

The win is testament to the long-standing relationship Equator Design has with Co-op and the unique way of working that has been forged over a 20-year period. The partnership model exercised by Co-op has fostered a collaborative way of working encouraging a fluidity of thinking to aid creativity, with teamwork and friendship at the core.

The Vertex Awards is the only international competition devoted exclusively to the art of private brand packaging design and are the most sought after in the industry. Each year, a highly-esteemed panel of judges assign the awards in recognition of ground-breaking creativity, marketability and innovation.

Co-op’s bronze-winning Christmas 2018 packaging, delivered across more than 440 SKUs, was designed to ensure Co-op products would stand out from branded lines, communicate taste cues and convey quality to inspire purchase. While working in close collaboration with Co-op and fully immersing themselves in the brief – in a veritable sea of mince pies and seasonal favourites – the Equator team applied extensive trend research, which provided insight into what customers say they really want and what sort of seasonal packaging most leads to conversion over the festive period.

This year the competition saw a record number of entries from 33 countries, representing the absolute best in packaging design from around the globe
