Aldi moves into cold pressed rapeseed oil market thanks to Phoenix

Aldi has taken 8.4% of the UK's £14 million rapeseed oil market with a new addition to its Specially Selected range manufactured by Phoenix Speciality Oils.

The discount retailer's first permanent listing of cold pressed rapeseed oil has been selling at rates of 80,000 units per month since being launched into 494 stores nationwide in November 2014.

Almost 1 million bottles are expected to be sold within the first year, as the latest industry figures show the rapeseed oil market is growing by 40 per cent a year.

The contract was awarded to Phoenix in partnership with Hammond Food Oils because it had the supply chain, the capacity and the expertise around quality needed to deliver an exceptional British rapeseed oil.

Four months on and 150,000 litres have so far been pressed, all filtered down to 1 micron of purity and filled into glass bottles with premium, litho printed labels with gold effect and a varnish to finish. The quality of the product and packaging is fundamental to the sales of this product and supports Aldi's focus on the best quality for the best price.

Managing director of Phoenix, Ben Guy, said: "I'm really happy with how the contract's going so far - we've processed volumes that other companies would have found impossible to handle and because we control every step of the supply chain for Aldi, from seed to shelf, they've been able to take a big share of a growing market quickly.

"The fact that we have presses and filtration systems together on site helps Aldi keep production costs low. That gives consumers great value for money, making cold pressed rapeseed oil an affordable luxury with a price point similar to that of olive oil.

"The oil's selling three times faster than rival brands as a result. We're even moving from packs of six to 12 to save staff in stores having to replace stock as often. We're looking forward to seeing how the product develops as Aldi continues to attract new customers in 2015."

Aldi's Specially Selected cold pressed rapeseed oil is available in Aldi stores nationwide, retailing for £1.99.

Phoenix has the UK's largest cold press facilities on site, allowing it to deliver half a million litres of oil to Aldi each year. All of its rapeseed comes from its extensive grower network of quality controlled British farms.
