The PPMA Show

22 August 2008

We introduce the event to be held at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham, UK from 30 September-2 October 2008

This year marks the twentieth anniversary of The PPMA Show, the UK’s annual showcase for processing and packaging machinery. In order to commemorate this, the event will be officially opened by Sir Digby Jones, who is now Lord Jones of Birmingham.

This year’s exhibition will feature over 300 suppliers, catering for the diverse requirements of numerous end-markets, including food and drink, household products, industrial, chemicals, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

Liz Finlay, PPMA Show Exhibition Director, commented: “The PPMA Show remains the ‘must attend’ exhibition for buyers and users of processing and packaging machinery. It continues to attract the single largest gathering of these professionals in the UK.”

“The show always delivers high-calibre exhibitors that are keen to demonstrate their latest developments. Each time, visitors will find machines that are faster, more accurate and more efficient than the time before, reflecting customer demands to improve production and minimise cost.”

The driving factors

The typical issues driving new product development across many markets include convenience, easy opening, ease of use and shelf-life maximisation, together with safety and security. Processing and packaging equipment manufacturers must take these issues into account during new machinery development. They must also meet changing requirements regarding efficiency optimisation.

Integration has consequently emerged as a strong theme in recent years. Manufacturers have now developed complementary equipment ranges, forming working partnerships with other companies further up or down the packaging line to deliver turnkey processing and packing solutions for end-users. New pack designs and materials, lightweighting of many packs, and changes in pack material selection all present new challenges, resulting in the introduction of new equipment.

Many strands – one show

As in the past, leading companies will be presenting their latest innovations and newest equipment. This year, visitors will particularly benefit from their attendance, as their badge permits them to enter the co-located Interplas exhibition. This is the UK’s leading exhibition for the polymer sector, incorporating the Inspex feature for the quality control and measurement industries. According to the British Plastics Federation, around 36 per cent of polymers produced in the UK are consumed by the packaging industry. There will be plenty of synergy between these two events.

Liz Finlay commented: “The PPMA Show is the perfect opportunity this autumn to view what’s new, speak directly with major suppliers, and source new machinery and equipment.”
