Print on parade

27 April 2010

Digital printing will be prominent in the exhibits at this month’s IPEX 2010 show in Birmingham (18-25 May).

Eleven ‘world premieres’ from Atlantic Zeiser (Hall 6 Stand C557) will include two new models in the Gamma series of full-colour UV print engines. These single-pass printers are available in four models, ranging from 70mm-140mm print width. Premium models feature built-in UV LED pinning for extra sharp images without bleeding.

According to Atlantic Zeiser, they are ideal for late-stage customisation of labels, packages and three-dimensional products

In Hall 12, stand C150, DuPont Packaging Graphics will showcase the Cyrel Fast round, an ‘easy to use’ hardware and consumable system that delivers a continuous print flexo sleeve for high quality printing and improved workflow productivity. It includes the new Cyrel round thermal processor, high productivity Cyrel exposure and light finisher units, Cyrel Fast round Photopolymer sleeves, as well as a high resolution cantilevered EskoArtwork - Cyrel Digital Imager. Designed for efficient workflow with just one operator, the system is said to be capable of producing more than four high quality imaged sleeves per hour, with the first print form ready to go on press in just 30min.

Epson (Hall 10, stand C260) will launch its Digital Label Press featuring Micro Piezo inkjet technology. Aimed at companies wishing to produce short runs of high quality labels cost effectively, it is said to deliver smooth gradations and superb colour quality on a wide range of media, including standard semi-gloss, film and matte labelstock up to 320 micron in thickness and rolls from 80-330mm wide..

On stand 12-AB150 - the largest at the show - HP will feature a ‘production floor’ with four major zones, one of which will demonstrate production of labels and packaging on HP Indigo presses. ‘Voice of Customer’ kiosks will enable visitors to hear first-hand how companies have used HP digital printing to transform their businesses.

Kodak (Hall 9, stand E320) will unveil a system for the packaging market called Flexcel Direct. It comprises a Kodak imager, media and workflow and new technology for direct laser engraving of flexo forms. An ‘affordable’ option for flat plate, plate on sleeve, or continuous sleeve applications, it simplifies plate making, removes the need for chemical processing and improves on-press performance, says Kodak.

On stand F821, in Hall 18, Mosca will have its state-of-the-art Sonixs technology in action as well as examples from its extensive range of bundle strappers and pallet presses. Sonixs is Mosca’s advance in ultrasonic technology, said to offer considerable speed and sealing advantages.

The new 75DI digital offset press is to be demonstrated by Presstek on stand C480 in Hall 7. It is said to offer very high quality (300 lpi or stochastic screening), extreme automation (8min job-to-job turnover); and a small environmental footprint with waterless printing technology, chemistry-free imaging on-press, fast run-up for minimal waste, and consistent quality from job to job.

Bespoke finishing systems specialist Rollem (stand E860, Hall 18) will show a new version of its Champion system offering fast and efficient semi-slitting (kiss-cutting) of stock such as pressure sensitive labels. The depth of slit can be controlled accurately and one set of tooling can be used to handle a variety of jobs. The system can quickly be reset for labels of different sizes and can even be used to semi slit, for example, greetings cards prior to folding.

Xeikon (Hall 11, stand C230) will stage a first public demonstration of its new 3500 digital label press – claimed to be almost twice as productive as its closest competitor. It comes with five colour stations as standard, the fifth for spot colours, ‘unique full rotary printing’ and 1,200dpi resolution. The press will apply a special security toner for anti-counterfeiting, and a ‘one-pass’ opaque white to create a ‘no label look’ on transparent labels.
