Focus on French flair

13 October 2006

With an increasingly international profile Emballage 2006 promises to make Paris the packaging capital of the world. So says Exposium, organiser of the top French packaging exhibition, taking place this year from November 20-24 at the city's Place des Expositions at Paris Nord Villepinte. Gerry Duggin reports

Of the 2,300 exhibitors, 51% are from outside France, with 46 countries represented. Data from the 2004 exhibition also underlines the high proportion of overseas visitors that frequent the show - of the 107,970 delegates 35% came from overseas. This year attendees can view over 400 new products, a third of them exhibited for the first time. Packing and packaging machinery (50.5% of overall exhibits) and packs and containers (36.5%) will take pride of place.

The 2004 exhibition showed Emballage continues to attract a broad cross-section of packaging-focussed visitors and tellingly, says Exposium, 82% of visitors “praised” the last event.

RPC Group will highlight a number of new developments. Thermoforming innovations include the first commercially launched thermoformed tamper-evident solution for food packaging, from RPC Bebo Plastik. Said to be more lightweight than any alternative injection-moulded solution, the polystyrene material also provides “excellent impact resistance at deep-freeze temperatures”.

RPC Containers Llantrisant will show its “groundbreaking” use of post consumer recycled material in PET bottles, as well as its standard range.

RPC Packaging Gent and RPC Packaging Montpont will demonstrate how their development of “technically challenging projects” can benefit agrochemical, automotive and food brands. A selection of custom-moulded packs highlighting unusual shapes, decoration or functionality will be on display.

Injection-moulded packaging from RPC Containers Blackburn and RPC Containers Oakham will also be exhibited. RPC Blackburn is showing a variety of FMCG containers, including the complete Thor range of tamper-evident food pots, its PET standard range comprising wine bottles and spirit miniatures, and the non tamper-evident pot range.

RPC Dairy Packaging will, meanhwile, show how decoration can enhance customers' products with a range of options, all offering photo-quality reproduction, including labelling, in-mould labelling and high definition dry offset pre-printed lids.

Finally, examples of co-ex blow moulded food containers at Emballage include jars for the high temperature processing of fruit or vegetables, upside-down bottles for ketchups and sauces, and sterilised juice bottles.

The Nordenia group is exhibiting five new flexible consumer packaging products, with and solutions for the food and petfood sectors set to be the centre of attention. Its Nordenia Deeutschland subsidiary will show the reclosable stand-up pouch, NorPouch, for the first time. It is said to be ideal for the packaging of any powdered product. Among other innovations from the Steinfeld operation are flexible bags with a handle in the side fold and laser perforation for easy opening. Nordenia Holland will exhibit, among others, high-grade printed candy wrappers with new 3-D printing as well as laser perforated PE films for the safe packaging of frozen food.

National Adhesives will demonstrate its new all-in-one package sealing solution, Easy-Pac. Launched earlier this year, the Easy-Pac package includes an “exceptional hot melt adhesive”, used at only 90 -100°C which means char has no chance to form. Consequently, says National, there is no clogging of filters, hoses and nozzles, “eliminating a major cause of production line downtime”. The package also includes a new hot melt application unit that will constantly ensure the highest clean level of application and an integrated automatic hot melt feeder so the unit can run “alone”. The company is also providing a warranty on the Easy-Pac system - both for the application unit and the cost of replacement parts ¬- which it says is an industry first.

National Adhesives will also display its Clear-Lok, Contour and Syntacol adhesive solutions. Clear-Lok is described as a powerful adhesive with excellent transparency for clear plastic labelling of glass or PET bottles. These allow labellers to achieve a “no-look” affect using existing wet-labelling machinery, eliminating the need to invest in PSA technology.

Syntacol 310 is a new hybrid adhesive with high tack and fast setting which is said to keep label slippage to a minimum on both wet and dry glass bottle labelling applications. National says it is ideal for the wine, beer and spirits sectors and offers production capabilities, maintaining its clean running performance, of up to 65,000 bottles/hr, “resulting in reduced downtime for cleaning”.

Top Emballage will showcase a range of dispensing solutions from Rieke Packaging Systems. These include a number of new products developed specifically for the personal care, pharmaceutical and healthcare markets including Rieke's Airless, Foamer and RS3, RS5 and RS30 dispenser ranges.

The Airless Dispenser has been developed for “fast and easy dispensing” of creams, lotions and gels. It is available in a choice of two designs - slim-line or wide-bore - in sizes from 50 to 200ml, with 0.5ml, 1ml, 1.5ml and 2ml dosing options. A “suckback” feature pulls product back into the nozzle for clean and hygienic operation and the top fill dispensing pack provides simple filling. The dispensers can be specified in natural, transparent and coloured combinations with a variety of decoration options.

Rieke's finger foam dispenser, which draws product from the container and mixes it with air at the point of dispense, is said to offer a number of features to ensure practicality and ease of use while providing on-shelf impact. Non-metal contact construction means the dispenser is compatible with a wide range of product formulations and ingredients.

The RS30 features a modular design with a variety of dosing options that are said to be able to handle a wide range of product viscosities. It is capable of fitting a broad range of bottle capacities and also offers new safety features, including tamper evidence.

The RS3 and RS5 lock-down shippable dispensers offer a choice of six head designs with doses from 1ml to 5ml and can incorporate different valve systems to enable them to handle products of varying consistencies

On the machinery front, Loma Systems will be launching the IQ3 Metal Detector and X4 X-Ray machine. Metal detection systems and checkweighing solutions from Loma and Cintex will also be on show. Loma says that, “unlike other metal detectors on the market”, the IP69K rated IQ3 is a true multi-frequency machine with the ability to select the “correct” operating frequency in seconds. The case and coil geometry is also said to deliver a “quantum leap” in immunity from vibration, electrical interference and thermal shock.

The IQ3 can also incorporate LomaEnet, an Ethernet Reports Capture System, developed for its range of checkweighers and X-Ray systems. This report and information management system allows the user to view and archive reports, which are required for HACPP and weight legislation.

The Loma X4 range of X-Ray inspection systems feature a new high speed USB sensor and Windows XP operating system with an intuitive graphical touch screen display. Product set-up is an automated process and the high-speed technology is said to maximise sensitivity to both metal and non-metallic contaminants. Other product defects such as component count, zone mass measurement and shape conformity are also available within the standard package.

TNA will demonstrate the ROBAG 3 stainless steel rotary double jaw machine, suitable for difficult-to-pack salad leaves and other fresh produce, as well as the ROBAG 3 rotary triple jaw with TNA 320 scale which can run at speeds in excess of 220 bags/min, combining high speed, with low waste. The company will also demonstrate its “gate-less” ROFLO distribution system which is said to eliminate product breakage and reduce maintenance and cleaning. “Servo-driven simple mechanics of the ROFLO system offers low force transfer and reliability ¬- the handling of even very delicate products made easy” says TNA.

Induction cap sealing specialist Enercon Industries is using Emballage to introduce its new French agent Extrudex and will be exhibiting its capless sealing system, the Rotary Junior, which is used for sealing containers without a cap or prior to capping, a system currently being used in the probiotics drinks industry.

Enercon says the Junior is a “natural replacement for the antiquated conduction technology and is designed to fit easily into any existing line”. It is said to be a small, compact but powerful system capable of sealing at speeds up to 300 bottles/min sealing a range of containers sizes from 30-110mm diameter. In addition to the Junior, Enercon will be exhibiting its latest addition to the Superseal range, the Superseal Deluxe, described as the company's smallest most powerful induction cap sealer in the Superseal range. The Deluxe can run at line speeds up to 30m/min sealing a wide range of closure sizes from 20-120mm.

AmbaFlex is showing the AccuVeyor AVD100. Described as a “lean dynamic accumulator” Ambaflex says it is now available for an increasing number of applications as it is “attractively priced, compact and simple to integrate”.

The AccuVeyor has a footprint of just 6m2, but a high accumulation capacity of over 140 metres of accumulation length. It is claimed to line throughput by automatically expanding its length as the line demands and is able to eliminate small micro stops and machine slowdowns. AmbaFlex says the first-in first-out spaced and sequential handling makes it “ideal for aseptic filling of carton containers and HDPE bottle systems as well as pouches”.

The SpiralVeyor SV and AmbaVeyor will also be exhibited. New in the range of SpiralVeyor's are the Dual Lane SpiralVeyor SVX, for a parallel flow of goods and the MultiLevel SpiralVeyor ML for inducting or diverting items on and from the spiral at multiple levels.

In partnership with its French agent, Matéquip, Kliklok-Woodman will be demonstrating its Certiwrap C150 wraparound cartoner. The machine will be integrated with a 'Smartbelt' infeed unit, for smooth, automatic, product timing and transfer - one of a choice of optional infeeds.

Kliklok says the success of the Certiwrap range can be attributed to several beneficial features - including quick 3-dimensional size change capability (now achievable in less than 10 minutes) and the ability to accommodate tray “doming”, where the film lid of a ready meal tray, for example, expands in production.

The C150 also has the versatility to handle round bowls, oval bowls and rectangular-shaped containers on the same machine, plus the ability to handle a wide variety of wrap-around carton formats.
