Creativity and technical skills shine out at MPMA Awards

28 November 2005

The 2005 Metal Packaging Manufacturers Association (MPMA) Awards, judged by senior packaging, design and marketing personnel from organisations including Tate & Lyle, Design Bridge, Butchers Pet Care and The Worshipful Company of Tin Plate Workers, were recently presented in London.

"Supreme Gold" went jointly to Crown Aerosols Europe and French aerosol specialist SICO for a reformulated version of SICO's King tyre repair and lubricant in an asymmetrically-shaped, easy-grip container produced using Crown's proprietary blowforming process. Crown says that, "unlike other shaping technologies", no tooling or liquids are used inside the container, preventing internal coating damage, while the technology also gives "a better surface finish and glossiness".

The contoured container features SICO's patented injection system, allowing the entire contents to be dispensed when the actuator is pressed, a rubber gasket for a solid, hermetic seal, and a 450 slanted injection nozzle to simplify operation.

The quirky design, incorporating simulations of tyres and a mileometer, helps maximise on-shelf impact. The container also won the Aerosol Product/Market Award.

Gold winner for Functionality, Rapid Dose, from USC Europe, is "a revolutionary aerosol for rapid, convenient delivery of chemical treatments into pressurised central heating systems". Based on Sepro bag-in-can technology, it has a threaded valve for connection to the heating system and, Sepro says, the whole operation "takes around 30 seconds", with no mess and the heating remaining fully operational throughout.

Another "convenient, secure container", the RYMCO motor oil 286 diameter pail with lid and ring latch, offering "a convenient, safe way" of packaging 25 litres of industrial product, won the Industrial Gold. The Impress Packaging manufactured pail is approved to the UN Y1.8 standard, allowing users to transport valuable, high-risk goods by air and sea.

Consumer Gold went to Tesco Finest Herb Blends and Seasoning rubs, a range of 83mm threaded aluminium window tins from Roberts Metal Packaging. The window lids give a clear view of the product, while the labels provide tamper evidence and strong branding. The tins also won the New Product/Market category Gold.

Scooping the Technical Innovation Gold was the first ever 18 gauge easy open end for 73mm diameter food cans, produced by Impress Metal Packaging for HJ Heinz, which Impress says represents a 10% steel lightweighting over the current "best market practice" of 20 gauge.

Guala Closures Group's WAK closure, Gold winner in the Closures category, was felt to "go a long way in replicating the traditional appearance of a wine bottle closed with a cork foil and cover". Designed to cater for consumers' increasing appreciation of screw caps' convenience, the WAK has a "unique" straight-sided aluminium cover, combined with a plastic insert, said to give "perfect adherence" on the bottle's glass neck.

Other Gold Award winners included Crown Bevcan's Starck can for Brasseries Kronenbourg (Alcoholic Beverages Gold), decorated with a specially developed pearlescent ink, Crown Specialist Packaging's striking holographic polymer-coated steel container for Nicolas Feuillatte champagne (Promotional), and Impress Metal Packaging's Homebase waisted can, specially designed for the female hand (Homecare).

Crown Speciality also took top honours in the Giftware and Flour & Sugar Confectionery categories respectively with its delicately coloured matte and gloss varnished tea tins with impactful lids for Twinings' Reserve range of Golden Tip teas and the premium tin for Thornton's Origins chocolates.

There were also top Product/Market Awards for Ball Packaging Europe's slimline 33cl steel cans for Coca-Cola France (Soft Beverages) and Impress Metal Packaging's microwaveable aluminium bowl with easy-peel lid and resealable overcap for Dreistern (Food).
