A capital event

3 September 2012

The latest designs, innovative materials, and sustainable solutions will be on display in the UK’s capital when Packaging Innovations returns to London’s Business Design Centre on 4 and 5 October 2012. With more than 140 exhibitors, the emphasis of the show is firmly on creativity, branding and marketing

In the words of Matt Benyon, managing director of show organiser easyFairs: “Engaging with consumers’ emotions and attracting their spend is a fierce business. When you add in the sustainability issues that companies must adhere to and the cost implications across the board, it soon becomes a very hard job for those who need to find solutions. Packaging Innovations London is designed to bring a number of these solutions together in one place, and provides different team members the chance to attend together and for individuals to discover innovations to make their roles easier.”

In addition to the exhibitors showing their products and services, this year's show will include the Keynote Theatre – presenting leading brands on the future of their packaging designs and branding; seminars from Coca-Cola and Tesco; learnShops; The BIG Packaging Debate; and The Brand & Design Village. The event will also host the next BPIF Cartons Conference, commencing on 3 October, a day before the show doors open. Delegates will then reconvene for the following morning, allowing them to spend lunchtime onwards at the show.

This year’s Packaging Innovations exhibitors include mailing equipment supplier AMS (stand VG26) who will be showcasing the Speedstar 3000, a short run desktop digital colour label printer which gives users “the freedom to print the exact amount of labels they need, in high quality, at extremely low cost”. The Speedstar label printer features a large colour touchscreen interface and high quality Memjet printheads.

Easypack (stand J7) will be demonstrating its “environmentally friendly” cartonboard shredder. The Easypack Shredder effortlessly converts surplus cardboard boxes into supple mats which are perfect for protection and void fill for all types of goods in transit. The flexible mat is very effective for packing heavy items and safeguards any sharp edges and corners.

Innovia Films (stand VG16) is to show visitors its new compostable coffee packaging solution – Econic coffee bags. These have been specifically developed by New Zealand converter Convex Plastics using Innovia’s NatureFlex compostable, cellulose-based material. Robin Dearnley, sales manager for Australia and New Zealand at Innovia, says: “Achieving success with partners such as Convex means that our NatureFlex films are well positioned to provide solutions to converters and brand owners. Especially those seeking to meet consumer demand for packaging made from renewable resources.”

The Institute of Packaging Professionals (IoPP) (based adjacent to the Keynote Theatre) will officially launch its membership drive for the UK division at the show, “with the aim of creating networking and educational opportunities for all those involved in packaging, from brand managers through to packaging specialists”. IoPP UK director Kevin Vyse says: “Packaging is not simply some technical specialism. It’s a crucial tool in any successful brand today.

“If our brands are to be world-beating, the packaging technologists and marketers behind them have to be able to understand each other’s disciplines and knowhow to draw on the best ideas and resources from across the globe.”

Kodak (stand H11) will be focusing on the highly interdependent relationship between packaging production and the brand owner. The company will show samples from its Flexcel NX digital flexographic system, “which offers customers the ability to develop business through innovation”.

With Christmas approaching fast when the show opens, Leeways Packaging Services (stand J9) will be showcasing a number of new seasonal products – from a multi-cavity pumpkin cupcake pack, to new party foods and convenience selection packs. One of the innovative designs is the end-of-aisle pallet display tray, an easily stackable, palletised solution said to be extremely efficient for layout, transport and storage.

Leo Luxe (stand GB38) is to present its new packaging concepts and launch its new brand identity. The new high-end designs on display include those created for customers in the premium drinks and gift markets, and are said to employ innovative secondary processes that transform the look and feel of paper.

Demonstrating its pioneering approach to functional yet creative packaging solutions, the Hong Kong-based company will present a range of retail packaging, luxury presentation boxes and gift items at the show under the new Leo Luxe brand name.

Manuplastics (stand H3) will be showcasing its growing standard jar/lid range including the new matt and gloss surface finish options across selected product styles.

Brand managers looking for improved spot colour consistency on packaging and labels can now rely on a series of innovations being brought together by specialist printer OPM Group (stand B4) and reprographics group Reproflex 3, Kodak and Nilpeter. Managing director at OPM Chris Ellison explains: “Colour consistency is a critical issue for brand managers. Consumer firms invest heavily in the creation of a specific brand image and colour palette, and need to be able to deliver their colour range, consistently, across all packaging and labelling materials and formats.”

Debuting at the show will be William Say & Co (stand C8), canmaker of London, and its stockist company, P Wilkinson Containers. The company will be displaying its latest food packaging lines, as well as a wide selection of existing ranges from ringpull tins and tea caddies to lever tin lids and plastics jerrycans.

The Sherwood Press Group (stand J5) will be promoting its packaging innovations, centred around its Pura sustainable packaging brand. Pura combines innovation in 2D/3D design, an aqueous barrier coating application for the ‘on the go’ food market, along with carbon reduction and waste minimisation in both materials and processes.

From print solutions to packing, Smart Karton's (stand B13) new international patent-pending All-Paper Pack is said to eliminate void fill, replacing it with a cohesive paper that secures the product in place within the package. Additional features include a self-sealing box made entirely of corrugated composite board and 100% recycled paper.

Manufacturer of visual presentation packaging Staeger Clear Packaging (stand VG24) will be exhibiting high quality products from a wide range of markets. The company specialises in plain and printed folding cartons, sleeves, lids and bases, tubes, drums, all of which can be complemented by in-house production of thermoformings. The “ideal option for brand owners who need green plastics to showcase their products” is made from 100% waste (70% old bottles and 30% skeletal) and is “entirely suitable for direct contact with food products”.

LearnShops

Some of the world’s leading authorities will address packaging’s hottest issues during the show’s 40 free-to-attend learnShops. Among them, Emma Gotch, on-line packaging and channel manager and Mark Forrest, quality control manager at Tesco Direct, will be discussing the challenges of online packaging. Dominic England, planning director: strategy and creative at Brand Potential, will be “unlocking your packaging’s potential” through well executed packaging design.

Packaging Innovations London 2012 will also welcome the return of Lions’ Lair, the Dragons Den-inspired competition, as well as The BIG Packaging Debate, which will see the country’s leading packaging specialists take part in a lively Question Time-style session.

Brand & Design Village

Supported by the Design Business Association, the Brand & Design Village at the Packaging Innovations London show will offer a chance for people to discuss their full packaging needs – from concept to creation.

First time exhibitor, Berry Place (stand GB8) has been “making ideas take shape” since 1990, whether it’s handmade hampers for Harrods, a bespoke brand marketing pack for Dewar’s whisky or vacuum formed PETG blister packaging with digital print for Panasonic’s rechargeable battery charger. The company will showcase a collection of projects, as well as displaying its latest technology and services.

Kre8ive Partners (stand GB12) will feature its latest design work for Goldenfry Foods. The company wanted to rebrand its logo and packaging range to create a modern, clean look and a bold, new style for its packaging, with the intention of increasing consumer brand recognition and shelf presence.

Also exhibiting in the Brand & Design Village will be NJD Creative (stand GB4), producer of high quality packaging mock-ups for all marketing applications, direct from the supplied digital artwork with the option of metallics, selective whites and a scannable barcode.

Branded packaging specialist Path (stand GB3) will be showcasing the relaunch of Chicken Tonight cooking sauce. Path abandoned the plated meal cliché on-pack, preferring to highlight the vibrant ingredients, the brand and the benefits. The company also helped Ragu to recapture its Italian-American heritage with a new design, also on display at the show.

Visitors in the healthcare sector should check out Pillbox Design (stand GB6), an independent packaging design and consultancy service that specialises in the design of pharmaceutical packaging and pillboxes.

Smallfry (stand GB9) has combined strategy and design for more than 40 years to help clients such as M&S, the NHS, P&G, Unilever and Adidas “develop good ideas into great products and services”. The company will be demonstrating its Created Futures “design-thinking tool”, which it uses to tailor its assistance to the client’s requirements.

Refreshing your brand: Increasing quality while reducing cost – mission or myth?

Brand owners are constantly striving to gain any competitive advantage they can in today’s challenging marketplace. So it is important for suppliers to face these challenges head-on and use their industry knowledge and expertise to offer solutions that not only match, but exceed the expectations of their clients.

Many recent ‘added value’ projects have been focused on reducing cost and, hence, compromising quality. This policy is often one that can be spotted by the consumer and, therefore, have a detrimental effect on future sales and brand loyalty.

At this forum we will be examining a project from concept to consumer pack that was jointly undertaken for the Birds Eye Iglo Group by digital packaging solutions provider Pulse Media, design house Jones Knowles Ritchie, flexible packaging producer Mondi Wheatley, and Kodak.

By adopting an open and joint approach to each challenge, the team were able to form a clear view and understanding of how to overcome the challenges of cost and technical application, and make it possible to offer the best of both worlds: increasing packaging quality, while reducing overall packaging cost.

On the panel:

Keith Mollan, managing director, Pulse Media

Jonathan Moore, Kodak GCG packaging sales director UK & Nordic

Lottie White, production manager, Jones Knowles Ritchie (jkr Global)

Della Lawrence, design director, jkr Global
