The future is ours to shape

18 January 2007

Welcome to the first Packaging Today of 2007 (to register for the complete digital version of each month's magazine click on the special link on the Packaging Today home page) - a year in which it will be fascinating to see what new challenges this dynamic sector faces, whether from the media, politicians, legislators or “green” campaigning bodies seemingly often primed and ready to attack packaging at a moment's notice yet apparently oblivious to where we'd all - consumers and businesses alike - be without it.

In an interview on p8 new UK Packaging Federation ceo Dick Searle argues strongly, pursuing a line no doubt equally applicable to the packaging communities in many other European countries, that it is high time the UK packaging sector stood up for itself and trumpeted its achievements. Such a message, also posited by new BAMA chairman John Bigley on p35 and Gordon Stewart of IOP: The Packaging Society on p7, may not be new, but certainly bears repeating.

The January 2007 issue not only contains news of the winners of the World 2006 WorldStar Awards - in which four European entrants have been shortlisted for the top Award (p4), but also extensive further coverage on the 2007 UK Starpack Industry Awards, which organiser IOP: The Packaging Society says have attracted unprecedented interest.

While the closing date for entries to all the award categories bar one has now passed, IOP: The Packaging Society would still be delighted to hear from packaging businesses particularly proud of their recent achievements who believe they might be worthy candidates for the Business of the Year category award - they have until March 30 to get their entries in (see www.starpack.uk.com.)

Starpack really is a chance for the sector to shine, while the awards evening is an excellent networking opportunity and a chance to discover what your industry counterparts have been up to. For full details of the awards, gala dinner and sponsorship categories etc see p18. Co-organiser Packaging Today is one of several Wilmington magazines supporting Starpack 2007 and we hope to see many of you for what should be an unmissable evening in Birmingham in May.
