LYNDA PURSER - New IoP chief executive

The Institute of Packaging has made Lynda Purser chief executive. The appointment is effective from 1 January 2004 in preparation for the retirement of John Webb-Jenkins in May 2004.

"This move heralds the beginning of a new era in the role of the Institute as it becomes a global force for packaging education and training," says chairman of the board of trustees John Bence.

"I welcome Lynda and look forward to helping her build on the significant strategic changes made under the dynamic leadership of her predecessor John Webb-Jenkins."

To take up her new post, Lynda Purser relinquishes her role as executive director of Milton Keynes, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Learning & Skills Council. At the council she had responsibility for all non-university, post-16 education. This included the planning and funding of further education colleges, school sixth forms, work-based training for young people, workforce development, and adult and community learning.

Lynda Purser also resigns as chair of the packaging industry awarding body – PIABC – which must remain independent of the Institute because of its responsibility for accrediting centres for the delivery of approved learning for the sector.

Alongside the appointment of a new chief executive, John Bence announced that John Webb-Jenkins will retain the post of managing director of IoP Services Ltd and take on the role of director of external relations for the Institute until his retirement next spring.

As director of external relations John Webb-Jenkins will retain responsibility for managing the Institute's national Starpack Awards competition; its involvement in the 2004 TOTAL exhibition; the development of corporate membership and corporate partnering; and marketing and public relations functions.

Andrew's appointment is part of the industry's strategy to work in partnership with a wide range of stakeholders in order to ensure glass recycling continues to grow and that glass remains the first choice material for food and drinks packaging."

Hartley joined Rockware Glass in 1987 after working in packaging design consultancy. He has acted for Rockware in various design, business development and marketing functions over the intervening 16 years.
