Hailed as ‘part of the packaging establishment’, David Smalley passed away on 5 November. In his long career, David worked for ES&A Robinson, Robert Shaw Co (now Speedo), Spirella, Fine Colour Printing, and founded his own company – David Smalley Ltd. Joining the Institute of Packaging in 1964, he chaired the Starpack judging panel and the Admissions Committee. He was awarded his Fellowship in 1980 and became National Chairman in 1986. By the time of the merger with The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) in 2005 he was Vice Chairman. Since then, David was a permanent member of the Packaging Society Board until his retirement only a few months ago. Last year he was given the IOM3 Outstanding Service award.
