Wipak targets stand up pouch sector with acquisition in Italy

20 June 2012

Food and medical packaging specialist Wipak Group has acquired the Italian packaging manufacturer Bordi Carlo.

Wipak – a division of Finland-based industrial conglomerate Wihuri – says the new company will enable it to “establish and further develop a strong platform to meet the growing demand of premade stand up pouches that integrate a wide variety of styles and convenience features”.

Matti Rovamaa, Wipak Group vice president and general manager, explains: “Wipak Bordi will strengthen our position in these growth segments.

“The company expects the integration to yield wide-ranging synergies in the product and service spectrum.”

The Wipak Group already has a strong presence in the food and healthcare markets, and Wipak Bordi will play an important role to further customise Wipak products and service offerings.

“Based in Italy, Bordi ideally matches Wipak and our growth strategy,” says Rovamaa. “Bordi will add to the Wipak Group extensive experience, advanced proprietary technology and a very successful track record as provider of customised pouches.

“Premade pouches in their many guises will complement our offering when it comes to sustainability, convenience and especially the ability to differentiate.”

There will be no change in management at Wipak Bordi as Marco Reggi will continue to steer the company’s affairs.

Engaged in packaging, wholesale of food products, technical trade and aviation, Wihuri Group’s turnover in 2011 was €1.7 billion, and the group employs about 4,900 people. Bordi Carlo is located near Piacenza, south-east of Milan.
