Weidenhammer Packaging Group (WPG) is investing more than €30 million on modernising buildings, and renewing and upgrading machinery and production lines producing premium packaging for dry and fresh foods.

Investing is the only way to maintain a position as ‘market and technology leader’ in consumer packaging, according to Ralf Weidenhammer, CEO of WPG.In September 2010 the company HQ at Hockenheim completed the reconstruction of one of WPG's two composite can production sites. It now has seven state-of-the-art production lines for manufacturing 10 composite can formats and four lines for making composite drums. A further production line at Lübeck will be used to manufacture composite cans with the new peel-off top, which could open the market for perishable foods such as milk powder, says the company.

A sum of €10 million will go to the group's plastics division, Weidenhammer Plastic Packaging, to add capacity at its Zwenkau site in the coming years. This will be supported by financial aid from the European Fund for Regional Development (EFRD) and the state of Saxony. Production space Zwenkau was more than doubled in summer 2010 to 9,000m2.
