Using its seamless, one-step in-mould labelling technique, Weidenhammer Plastic Packaging (WPP) has developed a new polypropylene ‘stay-fresh’ cup, in partnership with Germany’s leading mozzarella cheese manufacturer Goldsteig.
Unlike conventional IML packaging, the PP cup has a soft contoured underside with the label covering the entire surface – previously only possible with thermoform containers and sleeve labeling, according to WPP.
Sealed with a composite film and completely gastight, the new 225g Goldsteig Bambini brand mini mozzarella packs have been on sale in Germany since August, and were on display for the first time to trade visitors at the FachPack packaging process chain show in Nuremberg at the end of September.
Weidenhammer uses its specialist IML technology to produce side and bottom labels that are seamlessly integrated, without edges, in a single step, giving the cup a soft, rounded underside and a pleasant look and feel for consumers.
“A realistic, three-dimensional image of mozzarella on the cup was extremely important to our client,” says WPP sales director Andreas Rothschink.
“Thanks to our expertise in the in-mould labelling process, we managed to meet these requirements and develop a solution that makes the product stand out from the competition at the point of sale.”
Goldsteig made the decision to strengthen its brand and repackage its Bambini Mozzarella product two years ago.
WPP says it is continuously improving its IML process, which was first used in packaging for Rügenwalder Teewurst sausage spread.
With 12 production sites, over 1,000 employees and projected annual sales of €235 million in 2012, Hockenheim-based Weidenhammer Packaging Group is one of the world’s two leading suppliers of composite cans, composite drums and rigid plastic containers.
