UK aerosols sector remains buoyant

17 June 2011

UK aerosol fillings rose by 3.3% over the previous year, despite ‘difficult’ trading conditions, according to the British Aerosol Manufacturers’ Association (BAMA).

The year-on-year growth in 2010 follows the ‘strong and stable’ picture of the previous year, says BAMA.

The personal care sector remains the main driver of growth, with hairsprays and hair mousses showing strong growth up 19.4%, up from 68 million units (2009) to 81.7 million units. Shaving products were up 5.4% to 197.8 million units; and suntan and bronzing increased by 7%, up by 43,000 units.

UK fillings of household products rose strongly. Bathroom and kitchen products saw 325% growth to 3.4 million units; and air fresheners grew 4.8% to 154.4 million units.

The vet and pet sector increased by 92.3% to 2.5 million units; automotive grew by 44% and 12.7 million units; and insecticides grew by 3.2% to 12.9 million units.

Sue Rogers, Director of BAMA, says: " The sector continues to show resilience overall, despite a difficult economic climate. Changes in the market are not necessarily reflective of consumer buying patterns but structural changes in the market. For example, we have seen companies moving filling back to the UK from China and Eastern Europe."
