Three Food Packaging Innovations Trends for 2016 and beyond

UK packaging innovation consultancy ThePackHub has highlighted the main food packaging trends for 2016 and beyond as they make final preparations for their Innovation Zone Live - Food event to be held at the National Space Centre in Leicester on 22nd November.

Paul Jenkins Managing Director of ThePackHub comments ‘We have collated nearly 750 food packaging innovations as part of the 1,300+ listings on ThePackHubs Innovation Zone database. This large collection of innovations allows us a clear view on what packaging initiatives brands are undertaking and what areas are most popular. We have highlighted three areas that are standing out for this year.

Firstly, on the go packaging solutions continue to come to market with a range of examples assisting consumers whilst out-and-about. A recent example is Pork Farms introducing an innovative snack pack for its Walls range of sausage rolls. The company worked with Parkside on the initiative to deliver an effective on-the-go snack pack solution. Consumers simply snap off the individually wrapped PP trays as and when required.

Another area in growth in food packaging are initiatives that deliver shelf stand out through visual differentiation. The fight to get noticed on shelf has never been more competitive and a number of brands are using packaging to get noticed. A recent example of this is a new film lid and tray pack for Young’s Seafood that has been designed to help enhance shelf appeal for consumers. The pack has been created by Linpac and features a specially designed newspaper print on both the film lid and tray and nostalgically recreates the takeaway wrapping method tradition for the UK fish & chip market.

The third trend area highlights how disruptive pack formats continue to make inroads. A recent example is UK packaging business Alexir Partnership creating packaging for a new cereal brand for Great Little Grains called Sown & Grown. The breakfast meals that have been packed in a disruptive resealable tube that not only locks in freshness but is also sure to create a stir at point of sale. The new pack shape is a creative alternative to traditional breakfast cereal packaging formats.

Alexir and Parkside are two of the 10 suppliers showcasing their innovations at Innovation Zone Live in Leicester on 22nd November. The event is the perfect opportunity for brand owners and retailers to get up to speed with the very latest packaging innovations in an interactive and engaging seminar environment. The programme is hosted by the brilliantly talented ‘Grumpy Innovator’ Costas Papaikonomou from innovation agency Happen. It will be interactive with breakout sessions, demonstrations and exhibits.
