Starlinger extends Easy Open solution to polywoven PP pinch bottom bags

22 November 2013

Starlinger & Co has developed an Easy Open woven polypropylene tape feature for the patented PP*STAR pinch bottom bags.

According to the Austria-based company it is now possible, for the first time, to use this type of “consumer-friendly” opening feature on packaging made of BOPP laminated polypropylene tape fabric.

With the pet food industry as its core market, the PP*STAR Easy Open pinch bottom bag have a low bag weight but are very strong.

Typically other types of easy open bag that hold larger quantities of content and therefore weigh a lot, have to use very thick packaging material and are heavy to avoid breakage and provide adequate protection, Starlinger says, meaning more raw material input at the beginning of the bag’s life cycle, and more waste at the end.

“Due to their special material combination they can hold large quantities of heavy content without tearing or breaking even when dropped,” Starlinger says.

Detailed market analysis by Starlinger and feedback from end users showed that the majority of end-users (75-80%) tend to open large packs of bulk packaged products such as pet food to empty them in one go into another container.

“In this regard, Easy Open proved to be the most convenient and cost-saving opening solution,” the company says.

PP*STAR bags are produced on the Starlinger pp*starKON conversion line, said to be the world’s first fully automated conversion line for poly-woven pinch bottom bags.

The Easy Open strip can be produced inline, avoiding extra production steps and consequently production costs.
