Spear labels bring summer cheer to Fresca beer

22 March 2012

Leading pressure-sensitive labelling company Spear has created the labels for San Miguel Fresca, a new light beer from Mahou-San Miguel designed to target summer and outdoor consumption.

Brewed by Carlsberg UK, Fresca is described as a “crisp refreshing lager, best served chilled with a slice of lime”.

Seeking technological solutions to provide a competitive advantage, Spear collaborated with its ink supplier specifically to develop a soft touch matt varnish.

This was combined on clear, pressure sensitive labels with a ‘coarse touch’ tactile varnish to create a contoured effect. UV inks were then utilised to create a standout visual contrast on the bottle.

Spear also reduced costs by employing an innovative thin material for a wider front label, enhancing the premium ‘no label’ appearance.

Carlsberg UK marketing director David Scott said of the new product, launched in the UK in February: “The starting point for any new product development is to look across the portfolio for gaps, and we realised there was a need for an easier-drinking, sunshine beer.”

The 4.4% abv premium bottled beer is expected to appeal to an upmarket consumer at occasions such as barbecues, al fresco dining and live music events.
