South African wine brands add impetus to Tetra Pak UK debut

4 September 2012

Wines from Namaqua and Du Toitskloof in South Africa will be the first brands to be packed in Tetra Pak cartons for sale in the UK.

Prominent UK wine importer Raisin Social is the first to take advantage of the partnership announced earlier this year between UK-based packer Greencroft Bottling (part of the Lanchester Wine Group) and Tetra Pak.

Raisin Social will market a range of products from the two producers in Tetra Prisma Aseptic 75cl cartons.

Namaqua Wines will fill an initial production run of 100,000 units of a red and a white blend, destined for the nationwide convenience store sector, while Du Toitskloof makes its UK national debut in premium supermarket chain Waitrose, also with red and white Fairtrade blends.

Ian Williamson, retail manager for Tetra Pak in the UK, said: “We are confident that the public will respond well to the new line, as customers and retailers realise the real practical and environmental benefits that Tetra Pak cartons bring.”

Simon Halliday, managing director of Raisin Social, stated: “There are clear advantages over wine in glass bottles; they are lighter, easier to use, can be resealed and easily recycled. We believe that wine in this format will become an increasingly popular choice for consumers throughout the UK.”

Globally, Tetra Pak reports that almost 10% of still wines are packed in cartons, and are particularly favoured in Argentina and Chile, with traditional European markets such as Italy, Spain, and Portugal beginning recently to take up the trend.

In the UK, a recent detailed study carried out by market researcher Wine Intelligence showed that the likelihood of consumers purchasing wine in cartons “rose from 40% to 66% as a result of consumers seeing, feeling and experiencing wine packaged in this format”.
