SIG Combibloc Food Option machine enables food manufacturers to add value

31 March 2014

SIG Combibloc has responded to food manufacturers’ ongoing requirements for improved margins with the launch of its Food Option filling machines, said to make it possible to fill “an unrivalled spectrum” of food products aseptically with no need for major additional investment.

Based on the standard SIG Combibloc filling technology, Food Option filling machines include minor technical adjustments prior to machine delivery that enable operators to add value by filling a wide range of additional food products.

According to the Switzerland-based company, if a filling machine comes with the Food Option, the quantity of chunky product ingredients can be up to 10%, with a particulate size of up to 6mm and fibres of 1x15mm, and viscosity can potentially be up to 3,500 mPas.

The flexibility of the Food Option filling machine technology is said to be key to products that allow higher margins: the system can be used by food manufacturers opting to aseptically fill products in carton packs ranging from non-carbonated soft drinks (NCSD) and dairy drinks, to pasty and high-viscosity food products, as well as products with a specific particulate content.

SIG Combibloc global product manager food Frank Ludwig says that not every manufacturer active in the food business, or looking to enter it, is in a position to take full advantage of the possibilities offered by the company’s existing food-filling machines – which are designed, he says, for the ‘crème de la crème’ of liquid food products containing particulates up to 25mm in size with individual fibres as long as 40mm, and products with up to 50% particulate content.

“However, a whole host of food products can be filled with ease using the leaner Food Option filling machines, which are based on the proven and less complex standard aseptic filling technology from SIG Combibloc,” Ludwig says.

As well as filling products such as beverages and bouillons on a single filling machine, the Food Option machines can fill more complex, and therefore usually higher-margin products such as veloutés or mouliné soups in carton packs.

In the dairy products sector too, manufacturers filing milk and milk-mix beverages can also use the aseptic Food Option filling machines for the more viscous dessert sauces, puddings and custard products.

SIG Combibloc says that food manufacturers already filling food products such as tomato passata, creme soups or dessert sauces in aseptic carton packs, can invest to “substantially broaden their product spectrum” with the Food Option machine.

“With the new Food Option filling machines, the customer only pays for what he actually uses,” says Ludwig.

“So we’re enabling our customers to tap into completely new, high-margin product segments – and to do so with a very manageable level of investment.”
