Sharpak punts larger punnets for late UK strawberry season

20 July 2013

Sharpak Aylesham has launched the newly developed SPL range of plastic punnets in response to retailer requirements for larger sizes to cope with the late onset of the soft fruit season in the UK this year.

The new thermoformed SPL range has been designed to offer flexibility in pack weights 600g, 700g and 1kg, while utilising the same cut size, and the flexibility of the solution also means Sharpak is quickly able to produce alternative depth options.

Following an unusually late end to the cold winter season, UK strawberry volumes in particular will be available over a much shorter season in 2013, meaning retailers are looking to offer promotional sizes, larger than the typical 250g-400g strawberry punnets.

“Consequently, growers have come under pressure to become increasingly flexible to fulfil changing retail requirements,” says Ruth Price, UK produce manager at Sharpak Aylesham – the UK’s leading manufacturer of rigid plastic packaging, and part of the France-based Groupe Guillin group of companies.

“The newly developed SPL range from Sharpak Aylesham is designed specifically to meet these rapid fluctuations.”

Sharpak completed development work on the new SPL range in just four weeks, to meet the late start of the 2013 UK soft fruit season.

Sharpak’s new SPL packaging will be demonstrated on stand 368 at the Fruit Focus show at the East Malling Research Centre in Kent, 24 July 2013.
