Protective packaging systems provider Sealed Air has announced a move into corrosion prevention technologies through an agreement with Germany-based COMPtrade Technologies.
The agreement, reached during Fachpack in September 2012, will see Sealed Air Europe become the first protective packaging manufacturer to combine COMPtrade’s Intercept Technology with conventional packaging methods, which it is claimed will create "potential savings of up to 25%” to customers.
Made of high-surface area copper particles that are permanently bonded into a polymer compound, Intercept Technology provides robust protection against corrosion and electrostatic discharge damage during transport and storage.
The particles react with elements present in the atmosphere that create and promote corrosion, such as salts, sulphur compounds, ozone, nitrous oxides and other ‘corrosive gases’ or atmospheric pollutants.
Corrosion Intercept permanently reacts with and neutralises these corrosive gases creating a cleaned atmosphere – a micro-environment that protects materials inside it against corrosion and degradation.
The system’s ability to provide corrosion protection without using volatile chemicals (VOCs) will allow Sealed Air Europe to create 100% recyclable products made from paper-based materials.
Ingo Lublow, Korrvu business development director for Europe at Sealed Air, said: “COMPtrade has an outstanding know-how of the anti-corrosion market and their input will be invaluable in helping us to provide the best possible protective packaging solutions.”
An announcement is expected before the end of 2012 concerning a “new development” currently being worked on jointly by Sealed Air Europe and COMPtrade.
