SAICA acquires Houghton’s Waste Paper in continued UK expansion

3 April 2012

Spain-based paper and packaging manufacturer SAICA has acquired Manchester-based recycling and waste management firm Houghton’s Waste Paper Ltd.

The move follows the Spanish company’s £300m development and opening earlier this year of the first new containerboard paper mill in the UK for decades, in Partington, Greater Manchester, and is a continuation of the expansion in the UK of SAICA Natur – SAICA’s waste management business.

Houghton’s Waste Paper runs a recycling operation in Audenshaw, Manchester, employing about 30 people, specialising in waste management services and confidential document destruction. This site will help the supply and stock management of raw material to the new SAICA mill in Partington.

“The acquisition of Houghton’s Waste Paper will provide our PM11 project in Partington with a local supply of raw material, which helps us in our aim to cut carbon emissions across the SAICA Group,” said Simon Dymoke, MDof SAICA Natur in the UK.

“We are pleased to be at the stage where we are able to provide our UK customers with the benefits of SAICA’s full product life cycle approach to packaging and waste management, which we’ve been working towards for some time.”

The addition of Houghton’s to SAICA Natur UK will add approximately 25,000 tonnes of waste to the amount managed by the company each year, bringing the total to 425,000 tonnes.

It will also add to the company’s combined turnover by £3.4m, bringing the combined SAICA Natur UK turnover to an estimated £74m (€89m).
