Rexam can recycling scheme engages local communities

5 October 2012

Employees of Rexam Beverage Can have collected nearly 300,000 cans for recycling, in the company’s European Community Can Challenge.

In its second year, Rexam’s internal scheme enables its employees to participate in and support the company’s sustainability commitments, competing for prizes of £5000 for their chosen charity, while directly involving the communities in which the local facilities operate.

Run over a ten week period in nine European countries in which recycling rates “could be improved”, the 2012 effort resulted in an extra 5 tonnes of cans being collected – equivalent to 45 tonnes of CO2 savings.

Tomas Sjölin, sector director of Rexam Beverage Can Europe and Asia, comments: “Our teams have really embraced the chance to educate their local communities about the importance of recycling and to help us make a difference in our mission to run a sustainable business and boost industry recycling rates.”

An award for the highest weight collected in the 2012 Rexam Can Challenge went to the company’s plant in Manisa, Turkey, where 1.5 tonnes were collected.
