Re-lock trays target chilled food and snacks market

Plastics food packaging manufacturer Færch Plast has developed Re-lock, a new packaging tray concept with a re-closeable feature for enhanced convenience.

Suitable for MAP (modified atmosphere packaging) sealing, and available in a wide range of tray shapes and sizes, the new Re-lock products are said to dispense with the need for re-sealing film.

The latest innovation from the in-house design team at Demark-based Færch Plast is part of the company’s ongoing strategy to increase focus on the chilled food and snacks market.

With an integral peelable film, rather than a separate or hinged lid, Re-lock achieves cost-savings through reducing the amount of material used.

Produced using APET (Amorphous Polyethylene Terephthalate) for its high clarity, the Re-lock products are ideally suited to cold foods and snacks, such as fruit, salad, dips and cold meats, where consumers like to see the contents in order to assess their freshness.

“If the food from a Re-lock container is not eaten in one sitting, consumers will now have the option of re-closing the tray and saving it for another time,” says Faerch Plast UK managing director Joe Iannidinardo, “without the need for a separate lid or an alternative means of covering the contents, such as cling film or foil.”

Depending on which of the three Re-lock closures is used, consumers re-cover the product either by clicking into place a tab that is attached to the film, or by slipping a tab through a pre-cut opening in the packaging.
