Provalin PVC-free sealant available for P/T caps

11 April 2012

Sealant compounds specialist Actega DS has announced that its thermoplastic elastomer sealing material Provalin 1771 – made without PVC or plasticisers – is now available for use with press/twist (P/T) seals.

Complying with EU and FDA specifications and approved for use in the highly-sensitive area of baby food products, the new Provalin variant can be used for all heat-treated (pasteurisation and sterilisation) products, as well as for a wide variety of lid sizes.

“Extensive tests with excellent results are already available as regards processing, storage safety, vacuum retention, opening features and migration,” the German company says. “Long-term tests will follow with the aim of confirming this positive development.”

Provalin was originally developed by Actega for products with a high oil/fat content, which are particularly susceptible to the possibility of fat-soluble plasticisers migrating from PVC sealing rings. In tests, Provalin 1771 has been shown to display “extremely low-migration characteristics”.

The company will exhibit the new product at the Private Label Manufacturers Association show in Amsterdam, 22-23 May.

The Actega Coatings & Sealants Product Division develops and produces coatings and sealants for the packaging and graphic arts industries. Part of the Actega group, the company claims to be the market leader in overprint varnishes and technological leader in the sector of water-based sealants for flexible packaging, as well as “the world’s leading vendor of sealants for closures and glass containers”.
