Promens eco promises

18 November 2010

Promens has launched what it believes to be ‘the first ecological airless dispensing system’.

Using the company’s AirFree technology, Ecolution is protected by three patents and made up of an airless bottle and an airless dispensing system with a reduced number of parts.

It is said to combine all the advantages of airless, including protection of the formula. Able to prove it can also take care of the planet, at Luxe Pack the system picked up the show’s first ever ‘green award’.

Among its award-winning features, Ecolution was ready to be produced industrially and the dispenser was formed of only four parts.

It also cuts down on carbon dioxide emissions and is more easily recyclable than piston based airless packages. Made entirely from plastics, polypropylene and polyethylene (PE), the bottle can be made with recycled PE.

The French body COTREP (Plastic Packaging Recycling Technical Committee) has assessed the recyclability of AirFree bottles in the HDPE recycled bottles stream.

Meeting eco-design principles, the weight of each part has been optimised, all raw materials used are standard materials, and Promens chose only local suppliers (within a 200km radius) to reduce the need for transportation.

Ecolution claims to be ‘the most compact airless packaging’, in terms of the ratio between formula volume and packaging volume. Compared to a piston-based airless dispenser, Ecolution reduces the packaging volume by 30%, say the developers.

The multi-layer co-extruded bottle can be produced in recycled HDPE. The external layer is totally made of recycled PE and represents 85% of the total raw material weight of the bottle, while the internal multi-layer pouch that is in contact with the formula, is made from virgin PE. The pouch contains EVOH, a barrier material that blocks all odour migration and guarantees the integrity of the formula.
