Placon PP food container relaunch reduces fossil-based polymer usage

Placon has redesigned its US market-leading HomeFresh Rotisserie Chicken Container with the aim of reducing its overall use of petroleum-based resins.

In its re-engineering of the 2-piece polypropylene lid and base container, the Wisconsin-based company – a leader in the design and manufacture of custom and stock thermoformed food packaging products and recycled PET materials – utilised a calcium carbonate filler in the container’s base.

As well as replacing petroleum-based, virgin material, the chemically inert, food-safe calcium carbonate filler is said to have led to enhancements in the product’s mechanical properties.

Jeff Lucash, Placon sales director stock products, says: “Throughout our development process, it was important for us to design a package that not only reduced our carbon footprint, but equally importantly, would not sacrifice what has made the containers so popular – their strong visual appeal and structural integrity.

“Companies are continuously in the market for packaging that meets a number of important criteria,” he adds, “from being functional to having shelf impact, all while meeting sustainability objectives.”
