Petainer moves on food sector with launch of PET petainerJar

9 April 2014

Targeting the foods sector for the first time, Petainer has launched the petainerJar, a PET jar said to offer “significant cost and sustainability benefits” over jars made from other materials.

According to the plastics packaging specialist, the option for food manufacturers to ship petainerJar either as a fully blown jar or as a PET wide mouth preform to be blown on their own premises as needed, can offer inbound freight savings of “up to 90%”, significantly reducing costs.

Petainer manufactures the petainerJar by creating a highly engineered preform made from a (fully recyclable) PET blend said to offer “significant benefits over standard PET”, including superior barrier technology for extended shelf life (if required), and maximised weight reduction in design saving materials.

Individual customers can create a range to meet their exact requirements, the company says, with sizes ranging from 300ml to 7.6 litres, and standard neck sizes from 63-120mm.

The petainerJar offers advantages in transportation costs and sustainability, as its reduced weight compared to jars made from other materials means more can be carried on a truck without breaching weight restrictions, while making maximum use of the load space, and in turn saving “dramatically” on freight costs and fuel consumption.

“Transporting jars in preform format improves environmental performance since many more can be transported in fewer shipments, further cutting down on road miles,” the company says.

Preforms also offer operational benefits, by requiring less storage space.

“The launch of the petainerJar is an exciting move for us and means we can bring our wealth of expertise into this part of the packaging market for the first time,” says Petainer group commercial strategy director Annemieke Hartman-Jemmett.

“Our new jars have so much going for them, and it’s our mission to ensure that as many food manufacturers as possible can enjoy these benefits.”

Well-established as a supplier of PET preform bottles, kegs and water coolers to the beverage industry, Petainer says the addition of the petainerJar to its packaging portfolio means it is now able to bring the advantages of PET to companies in the food industry.

Headquartered in the Czech Republic, Petainer has manufacturing plants in Sweden and Russia, and sales offices in Germany, UK and USA.
