Gourmet product manufacturer Appel is using PermaSafe packaging by Weidenhammer Plastic Packaging (WPP), for a new ambient range of ready-to-eat products in single-portion packs.
For the first time WPP has combined in-mould labelling (IML) with embossed elements in Appel’s Snacks & Salads, designed to grab attention at the point of sale.
The microwaveable, container is injection moulded, with an ‘easy to open’, peel-off seal and a resealable lid.
Appel cooks the snack foods in the containers at a temperature of around 121°C, to guarantee a 12-month shelf life. The containers and labels are said to withstand the cooking process without damage. After cooking, the lid is attached with an adhesive label with a best-before date.
The labelling was a challenge, says Andreas Rothschink, WPP head of sales: “The side label is long and narrow, which makes it difficult to position it in the mould for processing. Precise positioning on the tray is a key factor in the product quality. We also had to allow for the shrinkage of the container in the sterilisation process to make sure the lid fit perfectly."
