Over £3m invested into glass recycling by leading waste management firm, Biffa

UK's leading nationwide integrated waste management firm, Biffa, has announced a £3.1million investment into its two glass recycling plants in Aldridge and Edmonton.

Aiming to reduce the risk presented by the volatile onward glass market, the multi-million pound investment will see Biffa's upgraded, cutting-edge equipment produce a better grade of glass, ensuring increased and sustainable profitability and growth for the business.

The process of glass recycling is complex and represents one of the most problematic areas of waste management faced by the sector. The upgraded technology will enable Biffa to reduce contamination and remove foreign bodies often found in this material.

Having the capacity to clean the glass in-house will allow Biffa to significantly increase the quality of recycled glass output, enabling the company to create demand in and target new markets, as well as open up new sales channels for the business.

Ian Wakelin, CEO at Biffa, comments: "In order to meet the needs of today's contaminated glass, while securing a profitable future for this area of the business, investment was a prerequisite.

"The new technology afforded by this major investment will enable our glass recycling plants to operate more efficiently and effectively, while ensuring we can create a sustainable pathway for business development."
