Open Date coders are SPL choice for sachet packing expansion

Sachet packing specialist SPL International has taken delivery of two new Sprint Major hot foil coding machines from Open Date Equipment as part of its ambitious expansion plans.

The investment follows the Cheshire, UK-based company’s recent move to a new 52,000sqft warehouse and manufacturing facility.

As well as supplying a full array of services for the manufacture of beverage alcohols, SPL International supplies sachets of ingredients for the Homebrew sector, much of which is exported.

The company has invested in a new sachet packing machine, to which the new Open Date Sprint Major coders are fitted, running at speeds up to 100 packs/min with sachet sizes ranging from 60 x 85mm to 180 x 130mm.

SPL International already uses seven Open Date coders for printing a diverse range of sachets with Best Before and Batch Codes, ingredients, logos and other information.

“Our experience with the equipment over the past decade was a major factor in our decision,” says Chris Birnie, plant and facilities manager at SPL.

“These machines give us the flexibility to handle complex printing requirements with minimal downtime for changeovers. We use Hot Foil coders for their indexing capabilities.”

Weighing only 8.5kg and capable of operating at 300 cycles/min, the Sprint Major offers a print area of 100 x 50mm and is the mid-range machine in the Open Date Sprint series – larger units that can be used for simple graphics and text, or for spanning over more than one label or pack.

Features include: a variety of print areas; left and right hand versions; stainless steel air motor; optional digital controller; variable temperature control; and compact size.
