O-I square bottle for vintage-style Hayman’s Gin relaunch

16 December 2013

The Hayman’s Gin range has been relaunched in new glass packaging created by glassmaker O-I, in conjunction with design agency Cook Chick.

Based on a bespoke family bottle from 1947, which was discovered in the brand’s archives in London, a single design will be used across the whole Hayman’s gin range in 700ml and 750ml sizes.

Owens-Illinois (OI) has produced a square bottle with four very flat panels tapering outwards towards the shoulder, topped by a long neck sealed by a screw cap closure with a deep tamper-evident collar.

The side panels are plain, with the front embossed with ‘Hayman Distillers’ above the label and ‘Family Gin Distillers since 1863 England’ at the base. As well as being embossed on the back panel, the Hayman coat of arms device is reproduced in colour on each label.

A deep, square punt contributes to an overall impression of substantial size. “The technical challenge was to maintain the flat surface and get good distribution of glass into all the corners,” says O-I.

The company – the world’s largest glass container manufacturer – says the embossing is “very crisp”, describing it as: “Far beyond the level of what was thought achievable by blow:blow glass manufacture even just two or three years ago.”

Hayman's is a range of different styles that follow the evolution and history of gin over the last 150 years.

The new container will be used across the entire range, which includes Hayman's Old Tom Gin, Hayman's 1850 Reserve Gin, Hayman's Sloe Gin, Hayman's London Dry Gin, Hayman’s Royal Dock Navy Strength and Hayman's Gin Liqueur.

The new stock is already shipping to UK retailers and, through distributors, to export markets around the world.
