Novelis Germany aluminium recycling centre on way to completion

14 June 2013

Novelis, the world’s leading aluminium rolling and recycling company, has celebrated the roofing ceremony at a new $250 million aluminium recycling and casting centre at its plant in Nachterstedt, Germany.

Located adjacent to the company’s existing aluminium rolling mill, the new centre will produce up to 400,000 tonnes of aluminium sheet ingot from recycled material annually, according to the company, and is projected to be the world’s largest aluminium recycling centre.

“Installation of the roof is an important milestone for this major project, which remains on track for completion in July 2014,” says Erwin Mayr, president Novelis Europe. “Interior work will begin immediately and equipment installation will begin this fall.”

Already the leading recycler of aluminium beverage cans in Europe, Novelis says the new recycling centre in Nachterstedt will support the company’s drive to increase end-of-life recycling in Europe.

The centre will process used beverage cans as well as numerous other forms of aluminium scrap from across continental Europe, and the company expects it to create 200 new jobs when it is commissioned next year.

The Nachterstedt expansion is the latest in a series of recycling and casting expansion projects launched by Novelis over the past two years, totalling nearly US$450 million, including the commissioning last year of the company’s new integrated recycling and casting centre in Yeongju, Korea.

“These projects, and others underway across the world, are designed to increase Novelis’ recycling and casting capacity to 2.1 million tons by 2015,” the company says.
