Nomacorc Select Bio closures in Italy sustainable wines partnership

24 April 2014

Nomacorc has established a partnership with a group of 12 sustainability-focused wine producers in Italy, Vino Libero, thanks to its Select Bio zero carbon footprint wine closure.

Synthetic wine closure specialist Nomacorc introduced Select Bio – the world’s first zero carbon footprint wine closure, made with plant-based polymers derived from sugar cane – in April 2013.

As well as being 100% recyclable, the Select Bio closure also reduces wine waste resulting from cork taint or oxygen mismanagement issues such as oxidation and reduction.

The producers in the Vino Libero group – including Fontanafredda, one of the most highly reputed names in Barolo – produce wines free from synthetic fertilizers (only using natural organic fertilizers), free from herbicides (land maintained according to traditional practices) and free from high sulphite levels (wines contain at least 40% less sulphites than the limit established by law).

“We share a belief that the production of great wines should happen with respect for the environment,” says Lars von Kantzow, president and CEO of Nomacorc.

“With Select Bio, we can guarantee that there will be no wasted wine due to closure fault – a devastating environmental impact – and that consumers will enjoy their favourite wines as they have been designed by the winemakers, through proper management of the oxygen in the bottle.”

Andrea Macchione, CEO of Fontanafredda, adds: “This collaboration stems from the desire of both Vino Libero and Nomacorc to constantly innovate and be at the forefront of new opportunities and projects.”

The Nomacorc/Vino Libero partnership was launched at the annual Vinitaly wine show in Verona, March 2014, and the 12 wineries will begin to use Select Bio closures with their bottlings of the 2014 harvest.
