New Versaperm SIV seal tester offers flight altitude simulation

Gas permeability measurement specialist Versaperm has launched the SIV III multi-functional seal-strength tester, which combines a packaging seal strength/integrity checker with a high altitude shipping simulator.

According to the Berkshire, UK-based company, the new SIV III system is designed to meet the complex requirements of the UK and European markets, although a separate version is available to meet the different standards prevalent in US markets.

While ensuring that packages are “strong enough to hold and gentle enough to open easily”, Versaperm says it is also “essential” to test the seals of products that are shipped at high altitudes, with so many goods now transported by aeroplane.

“Defective seals dramatically slash the shelf-life and quality of products such as foods and pharmaceuticals,” the company says.

“Balancing all of the factors in a manufacturing environment demands careful measurement and tracking. Seal verification provides this data and is usually non-destructive.”

The high altitude shipping simulator (HASS) includes testing for the simulated height, the number of high peaks the goods need to fly over, the ramp speed (or rate), and time at the peak.

“Results can be fed into a QC system to produce statistical results, which allow the manufacturer to spot the first signs of any trends or problems and thus take preventative measures,” the company says.

The new Versaperm SIV III equipment is fully compliant with CE and ISO 9001 standards.
