With a planned floor area of nearly 70,000sqm, construction of the new JPY27 billion (€220m) site in Gunma Prefecture, Japan, will commence in November this year, with completion scheduled for the spring of 2014.
As well as servicing rapidly expanding demand for flexible packaging in markets around Asia, Toppan aims to supply overseas markets “where growth is anticipated”.
Toppan says it will put in place a clean production environment and advanced quality control system at the new plant, including state-of-the-art equipment such as a bespoke VOC (volatile organic compound) recovery and reuse system and efficient energy cogeneration systems to reduce electricity consumption and therefore CO2 emissions.
“In the future, Toppan Printing plans to create a highly efficient production structure combining R&D and production by establishing an R&D facility within the site of the new plant,” the company says.

An evolution of GL Film, Prime Barrier is Toppan’s new brand for highly functional clear high barrier films, said to have “excellent barrier performance and functionality”.
