Natureflex is a hit in North American snacks

North American snack food manufacturer Boulder Canyon Natural Foods is using a compostable pack for its All Natural Kettle Cooked Potato Chips, thanks to Innovia Films.

The bag is claimed to be the first of its kind on the market to be made from a structure that incorporates metallised NatureFlex NKM from Innovia Films and said to look, feel and sound the same as traditional, non-compostable bags.

NatureFlex is a cellulose-based flexible film manufactured containing over 90% renewable content as measured by ASTM 6866 and is compostable in home and industrial settings, meeting the requirements of ASTM D6400 and EN13432 standards by composting within six weeks.

Boulder Canyon’s senior vice president of marketing Steve Sklar says: “Our new compostable packaging ensures that we set a positive example for the industry…by diverting waste away from landfills.”

According to Innovia, NatureFlex is suitable for 'waste to energy' techniques such as anaerobic digestion.

The material was recommended for the Boulder Canyon bag by Canadian-based packaging converter Genpak, whose development manager, Bill Reilly says: “The film performs well technically and has excellent moisture, gas and light barrier properties that enhance shelf life and protect the product.”

NatureFlex can be used for packaging confectionery, bakery goods, fresh produce, dried goods, snacks, household products and personal care items.
