Mondi sets cement pack standards in Thailand

25 November 2011

Global paper and packaging group Mondi has built on an existing partnership in Thailand, to introduce its 2-ply 70gsm Advantage Select sack kraft paper for 40kg cement bags.

The move follows the successful implementation in August 2010 by Mondi and Siam City Cement (SCCC) of a high porous bag construction for 50kg cement packaging – a 2-ply 80gsm construction that became the benchmark throughout South-East Asia.

“The new two-ply 70gsm construction is considered to be the most cost-effective and best performing 40kg cement bag solution in South-East Asia,” explains Gerry Gosen, managing director Mondi Packaging Paper Sales Asia.

Meeting the requirements for quick, dustless filling and tough handling, the new construction provides SCCC with a range of benefits throughout the supply chain, added Gosen.

SCCC, 35% owned by Holcim, is one of the largest cement manufacturers in south-east Asia, with the capacity to pack 15,000 tons per day of bagged cement.

Mondi’s sack kraft paper grade Advantage Select has been used to successfully implement new 2-ply constructions throughout the Holcim group.

Two-ply high porous bags manufactured out of Advantage Select are lighter and stronger and deliver cost savings to both bag convertor and cement producer.

Advantage Select sack kraft paper has been adopted by the majority of converters and cement producers in south-east Asia.

Mondi Kraft Paper, a business unit of the company’s Europe & International Division, is a leading European supplier of a wide range of kraft papers and bleached as well as unbleached market pulp. The business unit operates seven production sites and offers high-quality paper grades.
