Merger of Billerud and Korsnäs completed

5 December 2012

First announced in June, the merger of cartonboard manufacturer Korsnäs and paper maker Billerud was completed at the end of November, to form BillerudKorsnäs.

The new company, formed by Billerud acquiring all shares in Korsnäs, will be: “A leading player in primary fibre-based packaging material and solutions.”

Former Billerud chief executive Per Lindberg has become president and CEO of BillerudKorsnäs, with former Korsnäs CEO Crister Simrén assuming the role of executive vice president and chief operating officer.

“BillerudKorsnäs has a leading position within several segments, in primary fibre-based materials for consumer packaging as well as for industrial appliances,” a company statement said.

“The purpose of the company is to create value that strengthens customer brands and competitiveness, thus ensuring the company’s position as the natural partner in smarter packaging.”

Operating in the business areas of packaging paper, consumer board and containerboard, approximately 75% of sales in BillerudKorsnäs are consumer related, with Food & Beverages the largest segment.

Europe is currently the most important market to the new company, whose annual turnover is about SEK 20 billion (€2.3bn).

On 30 September 2012 Billerud had 2,490 employees and Korsnäs 1,883 – consequently BillerudKorsnäs has approximately 4,400 employees in total.

Paper and board production takes place at eight production units – Gävle, Gruvön, Frövi/Rockhammar, Skärblacka and Karlsborg in Sweden; Pietarsaari and Tervasaari in Finland; and Beetham in the UK.

Total production capacity is approximately 2,900 kilotonnes annually.
