The recently launched ‘PET lite 9.9 carbonated’ ultralight beverage bottle design from Krones has added a prestigious iF product design award to its list of early recognitions.
According to the Germany-based packaging machinery specialist, at just 9.9 grams the innovative 500ml drinks bottle is 30-45% lighter than comparable PET containers on the market, yet is still suitable for carbonated beverages.
Krones says the ‘PET lite 9.9 carbonated’ can be produced with “minimal expenditure of energy and material”, by dividing up the bottle into several functional areas with different wall thicknesses.
Most of the PET material is located in the upper part of the bottle, where it is held and opened, whereas the walls in the lower section receive only half as much material.
“Nonetheless, the bottle is reassuringly stable for handling and consumers’ use, thanks to its sophisticatedly ingenious container geometry, in which the designers have left not a single square millimetre to chance,” the company says.
Further significant weight savings are achieved with a special neck finish, which allows a tear-off ring-pull closure to be used in place of the conventional screw-cap.
The environmental credentials of the Krones ‘PET lite 9.9 carbonated’ ultralight are further enhanced by the use of a direct printing method said to eliminate the requirement for label material and adhesives.
