It's all in the label

International Paper Foodservice Europe has welcomed the publication of the first Global Consumer Survey by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification, PEFC, which found that more than 80 per cent of consumers globally want companies sourcing certified material from sustainably-managed forests to use certification labels.

Furthermore, the PEFC survey found that nearly 30 per cent of all consumers responded that they actively look for forest certification labels and over half (54 per cent) "consider certification labels as the most reassuring proof that environmental and sustainable development considerations have been taken into account."

International Paper Foodservice Europe manufactures a wide range of paper board foodservice packaging items, including hot cups and food buckets and is committed to sourcing its paper from trees that have been grown and harvested in a sustainable manner.

All foodservice packaging items supplied to the UK market by International Paper Foodservice Europe meet the requirements of the SFI Certified Sourcing programme. This North American-based programme is the single largest certification programme. It ensures the use of fibre from responsible and legal sources and demonstrates International Paper's support for improved forestry practices and strong communities. In 2005, the SFI Programme was endorsed by PEFC after a detailed examination by a PEFC-approved assessor.

This PEFC survey follows the publication of a YouGov Poll last year, commissioned by the Confederation of Paper Industries, CPI, which found that some 57 per cent of UK consumers prefer their groceries to come in paper-based packaging in contrast with only 8 per cent who claimed their preference was for plastic.

These reports are encouraging because they show that the consumer is increasingly recognising the environmental benefits of responsibly sourced paper-based packaging. We often hear from our customers that sustainability is playing a bigger role in the packaging decisions they make and that they are interested in options that reinforce their commitment. Specifying paper-based packaging solutions carrying a recognised certification mark is one way of meeting that challenge head-on.
