The Northern Ireland division of global packaging giant, Huhtamaki, has received a Platinum Award for energy conservation standards in this year's Business in the Community's Environmental Benchmarking Survey.

Competing against 103 participating organisations, Huhtamaki (Lurgan) Ltd topped sustainability polls with an impressive score of 91% compared to the 74% average, making it one of only 16 companies in Northern Ireland to earn a Platinum Award.

Managing Director of Huhtamaki Lurgan, Philip Woolsey, said:

"Sustainability and ecological welfare is of huge importance to Huhtamaki, here in Lurgan and indeed globally.

"In the three years between 2010-2013, we have significantly reduced our energy usage by 19% with 89% of waste generated being diverted from landfill, something we're hugely proud of.

"We recognise that as a large-scale manufacturer, we have a responsibility to the conservation of our surrounding environment and endeavour to improve sustainability standards within the manufacturing sector.

"Over the years we have identified a number of closed loop solutions that have enabled us to significantly reduce our carbon footprint and crack down on energy consumption levels.

"Any waste generated onsite for instance, is recycled in house and then used to make our egg cartons and other molded fibre products, which in turn are 100% biodegradable, compostable and recyclable themselves.

"We're delighted to receive this Platinum award in recognition of our environmental efforts and demonstrate further that we can all contribute to a more sustainable future."

Employing over 200 employees from across the province, Huhtamaki Lurgan Ltd operates within the Group's molded fibre segment and is the sole producer of egg cartons and coffee cup carriers in the UK and Ireland, supplying to a number of high profile food retailers such as Tesco, Sainsbury's and M&S.

Programme Manager for Business in the Community, Patricia McCambridge said:"This is only the third year Huhtamaki has been involved with the programme, attaining Platinum status and 8th overall.

"Huhtamaki scored top of their sector and managed to fight off stiff competition from some of the most well-known manufacturing companies in Northern Ireland which is a huge achievement.

"This year's survey has revealed a decrease in the overall environmental performance of participating organisations from 77% to 74%, as a result of tougher calls to provide concrete evidence of sustainability improvements.

"With a score of 91%, Huhtamaki has more than earned its Platinum title and is now an exemplary model of how a responsible manufacturer should function to meet sustainability targets."
