Heavyweight BillerudKorsnäs flute opens new market possibilities

30 October 2013

A new heavyweight semi-chemical fluting in 220gsm being launched by BillerudKorsnäs is said to be so strong that it “can contribute to replace wood packaging”.

According to BillerudKorsnäs, it has developed Billerud Flute 220gsm at its mill in Gruvön, Sweden, following market driven demands on strong containerboard materials for heavy-duty packaging, and after “extensive trials and evaluations”.

“The new grammage will be able to contribute to lightweight corrugated solutions when replacing double wall or dual arch constructions with single wall solutions,” the company says.

The fibre-based packaging manufacturer has already begun introducing the new product on the market and reports feedback to be “very positive”.

BillerudKorsnäs sales director containerboard Mikael Andersson says: “Thanks to this strong fluting we can support brand owners in receiving safe and smart transport packaging solutions with less material usage.”

According to the company, the main reasons for companies looking to use a strong corrugated board instead of wood include:

  • the weight of the box is reduced dramatically, facilitating logistics and handling, and enabling freight costs reductions and reduced environmental impact
  • the corrugated construction acts as shock absorber for sensitive heavy duty products, thereby reducing the risk of damaging high value goods
  • corrugated board is not affected by regulation concerning damage by pests and insects on wood packaging
  • opportunities for printing attractive graphics on corrugated packaging
