Guala trees scheme off-sets screwcaps production carbon

21 May 2013

For the third consecutive year in 2013, Guala Closures Group is to off-set CO2 emissions from the manufacture of its metal screwcaps for wine bottles via a reforestation programme – this year in India.

The Italy-based leading closures manufacturer says the planting of 80,000 trees from 17 different species will off-set the CO2 emissions from 1 billion of its screwcap closures.

In 2012, the company instigated a reforestation programme in Peru to off-set half a billion wine screwcaps, and in 2011, 55 million wine screwcaps were off-set by planting in Costa Rica.

“Anyone can buy carbon credits to off-set their CO2 emissions, but we do more,” says Guala Closures COO Franco Bove.

“This time we are supporting a reforestation programme in Bihar, East India – one of the poorest districts in the country – in co-ordination with the Up2green NGO and in collaboration with the state of Bihar, to support the region’s biofuel, horticulture, medical and timber industries, which will hugely benefit the communities there.”

The billion screwcaps in question now qualify for the Guala Closures private eco-responsible label ‘top’, which is certified by independent body Ecocert Environnement, and includes off-setting CO2 emissions generated during the production phase to delivery to the customer as one of its criteria.

With 25 manufacturing plants worldwide and five research centres in India, China, Mexico, Scotland and Italy, Guala Closures is the number one in its sector with sales in over 100 countries.
