Global roll-out for Henkel Technomelt Supra adhesive

14 June 2012

Henkel has confirmed the global roll-out of a “new generation” of hotmelt packaging adhesives: Technomelt Supra 1000.

The Düsseldorf-headquartered group says the new adhesives range is compatible with a wide range of materials and brings “extreme bonding performance” – thanks to a new base polymer that “not only significantly improves processability and efficiency, but also reduces adhesive usage”.

The base polymer in Technomelt Supra 1000 is said to reduce adhesive usage by up to 20% compared with metallocene-based hotmelts, and by up to 40% in comparison with EVA-based hotmelts.

“After obtaining excellent results in customer line trials lasting several months that confirmed its outstanding quality and performance capability, we are now launching the global rollout of this product,” says Jean Fayolle, corporate senior vice president consumer goods and construction adhesives at Henkel.

To manufacture Technomelt Supra 1000 adhesive technology, Henkel developed and implemented a completely new production and process technology, said to be “unique in the industry”.

According to the company, other benefits of Technomelt Supra 1000 adhesives include:

  • “Crystal-clear” appearance, making it “almost invisible” on the package
  • Excellent adhesive flow properties, without any stringing or cracking
  • Easier machine cleaning, as adhesive residues can be easily removed from metal parts
  • Improved flowability in automatic filling systems
  • Good heat resistance, assuring safe transport of packages even to regions with hot climates

Higher thermal stability and good cold flexibility has enabled Henkel to “substantially expand” the range of uses for the new hotmelt, making it suitable for a large variety of packaging applications – for example, being more resistant to etheric oils, it can be used to make packaging for tea or chewing gum.

Technomelt Supra 1000 can also help Henkel customers to improve their environmental performance, as “much less adhesive is needed for the same volume of packages produced”. Moreover, less waste is generated as the quality of the adhesive reduces the reject rate in production.

“At the same time, we can also assure continuity of supply to our customers, which is a great advantage considering the current volatility of raw materials markets,” adds Jean Fayolle.
